Back to Basics: The Po' Boy

There are some iconic New Orleans foods you can’t not try. Top of our list: the Po’ boy. It’s a classic, two-fisted New Orleans sandwich that just never gets old. And our top recommendation for getting your po' boy fill is the Parkway Bakery & Tavern, known for serving up bountiful selections of golden-fried fresh oysters, shrimp, catfish, roast beef, (and others!) -- heaped onto crusty, fresh-baked French rolls since 1911. Featured above: The Golden Shrimp Poor Boy

When it's time to order, don't forget to grab a bag of Zapp's chips on the side. You'll need those for scooping up all of your delicious sandwich overflow.

Honorable Mention: The Half & Half at Domilise's or the Roast Beef at Parasols

Wake Up to Sweetness

Wake Up to Sweetness

You'll wake up to delicious coffee here at the Cambria New Orleans, but we won’t even try to compete with the New Orleans classic that is Café du Monde, located in the French Market. Originally established in 1862, it’s the go-to spot for local chicory coffee or cafe au lait and light, delicious beignets, swimming in powdered sugar. It’s the perfect wake-up call for your first morning in New Orleans.

On the other hand, Café du Monde is open 24/7, and a bag of piping hot beignets is known to hit the spot after the Frenchman Street bands close out their last sets of the night. Just sayin'.

Honorable Mention: Morning Call or Café Beignet

Honorable Mention: Brennan's for an old-school Creole experience or the Ruby Slipper for down-home breakfast fare

For a Casual, Affordable Lunch

Head to the lush, quiet patio of the Napoleon House for a Creole lunch that will leave you deeply satisfied after a long walk around the French Quarter. From grilled alligator sausage to seafood gumbo to a seriously good debris po' boy, there are so many menu items you can’t afford to miss.

Honorable Mention: Central Grocery & Deli for the Muffuletta, Mother's for their famous Ferdi’s Po-Boy, or the Acme Oyster House for gumbo, oysters on the half shell, and shrimp po' boys

Experience modern French cuisine made from fresh, locally-sourced ingredients at Uptown's Gautreau’s. Offering completely new menus every six weeks, Gautreau’s strikes perfection and creates inspiration with each and every plate that leaves their kitchen.

Honorable Mention: Galatoire's in the French Quarter and Commander's Palace in the Garden District both offer traditional, French-Creole fine dining experiences

A NOLA Seafood Experience

A NOLA Seafood Experience

While foodies travel to New Orleans in pursuit of the city's best boucherie boards, cocktails, and muffulettas, NOLA is first and foremost a seafood city. During your next visit, get your hands dirty and experience the bounty of the Gulf with a seafood boil at Deanie's Seafood Restaurant. Start with some oysters, order a cup of crawfish bisque, and treat yourself to some of the finest food in the Crescent City.

Honorable Mention: Uptown's Superior Seafood for their crab-stuffed mushrooms or Mandina's for their fried seafood platter

The World's Greatest Chicken

The World's Greatest Chicken

In the South, fried chicken is a way of life, and New Orleans has the reigning queen of golden-brown deliciousness: Willie Mae's Scotch House. Located in a converted house in Tremé, Willie Mae's attracts block-long lines for their perfect chicken, red beans, and cornbread.

If you put back one-too-many Pimm's Cups the night before, a three-piece with butter beans for breakfast will feel like a religious experience. Trust us.

Honorable Mention: Sylvain's buttermilk-fried “Chick-Syl-vain” Sandwich just off Jackson Square or the original Popeye's (yes that Popeye's)

Award-Winning Locales

Award-Winning Locales

The James Beard award winning Cochon (which means “pig” in French) has developed a die-hard following for old-style, porcine Cajun dishes you will dream about until your next visit. If you're looking for a more laid-back, fast casual experience, check out their adjacent Cochon Butcher, who serves up a crazy good pork belly, mint, and cucumber sandwich.

Also a James Beard award winning restaurant, Peche deserves an honorable mention. Inspired by South America, Spain, and Gulf Coast flavors, their food is locally and sustainably sourced but still leaves tastebuds tingling.

Best of all, both award-winners are located conveniently in the Warehouse District, just steps from Cambria New Orleans hotel.

After-Dinner Cocktail Adventures

After-Dinner Cocktail Adventures

The food gets so much attention it’s easy to forget about the incredible cocktails conceived and perfected in the great city of New Orleans. But one after-dinner jaunt to the inimitable French 75 for a La Louisiane will help you forget about what was on your plate and revel at what’s now in your glass.

If your after-dinner drink turns into two (which it always does), don't pass up French 75's classic, namesake drink, made with cognac, sugar, lemon, and champagne.

Honorable Mention: Hermes Bar at Antoine’s for a gin fizz, Pat O’Brien’s for a mint julep, or Tujague’s for an old fashioned
